Jaws (film)

Jaws is a 1975 American film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchleys 1974 novel of the same name. The prototypical summer blockbuster, its release is regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history. In the story, a giant maneating great white shark attacks beachgoers on Amity Island, a fictional New England summer resort town, prompting the local police chief to hunt it with the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter. The film stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as oceanographer Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw as shark hunter Quint, Murray Hamilton as Larry Vaughn, the mayor of Amity Island, and Lorraine Gary as Brodys wife, Ellen. The screenplay is credited to both Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actorwriter Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography.

During a latenight beach party on Amity Island, a young woman goes swimming in the ocean. While treading water, she is violently pulled under. The next morning, her remains are found on the shore. The medical examiner determines it was a shark attack. Police Chief Martin Brody decides to close the beaches but Mayor Larry Vaughn overrules it, fearing that it will ruin the summer tourist season, and the towns primary revenue source. He theorizes the girl was killed in a boating accident, and the coroner now concurs.Brody reluctantly accepts their conclusion until another fatal shark attack occurs shortly after. Amid an amateur sharkhunting frenzy, local professional shark hunter Quint offers his services for 10,000. Meanwhile, Matt Hooper, a consulting oceanographer, examines the first victims remains and concludes the death was a shark attack. ........
